Over the past few months I have been getting a lot of questions about my skin care routine, so I thought it would be a perfect post! I must say skin care is one of my obsessions, my mother taught me from a very early age the importance of taking care of my skin and I can count on one hand the amount of times I go to bed without washing my face in a year, it is probably once.
Wash your face, sounds simple right? Well I am constantly shocked by the amount of women who do not wash their face on a regular basis. I actually wash mine twice each evening and once in the morning. First with my makeup remover and then a cleanser- makeup remover does just that, removes your makeup and cleanser actually cleans your skin of anything that is left. I am currently using Green Clean by Farmacy as my makeup remover followed by something for my pregnancy acne, Pretty Mommies is my current favorite!
I also make sure I use a washcloth for a bit extra exfoliation.
Now this gets a little trickier, I use different products depending on the climate I am in, the condition of my skin, how much I have been traveling, etc..
When my skin is drier I use Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream. It is luscious, rich, and smells wonderfully clean. When my skin is in a more normal stage I use something lighter, my current favorite is Watermelon Glow Pink Juice by Glow Recipe (I also love Dr. Jart HydraFuse but the watermelon smell of Glow won me over for now).
This is when I fight my battles. Since I became pregnant I have had big time problem skin- well problem skin for me. A lot of clogged pores, small bumps, and some big puppies that pop up on my cheeks, jawline and even neck. I would normally pull out the big guns and use medical grade products or run to my dermatologist for a cortisone shot, but since becoming pregnant I have really tried to stick to natural products!
This is how I came across the brand Farmacy, it is a line I discovered at Sephora and comes from upstate New York. The whole line is based on the Echinacea GreenEnvy plant which contains 300 times the antioxidants of regular Echinacea. I use the makeup remover (Green Clean) but my favorite product from the brand is the Honeymoon Glow Resurfacing Night Serum. With just 2 pumps I can feel the gunk on my skin melt away! I personally like products that have a bit of tingle, as this does, because I feel like it is working better and more effective.
I alternate this product with the Pretty Mommies Truth Be Told Skin Enhancer; it is slightly more drying than the Honeymoon Glow, which is why I alternate.
If I could tell you to do one thing for your skin it would be exfoliate! Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! This is something every doctor and esthetician I have ever been to and even Margaret Sanders the OG of skincare (my mother) has told me, is one of, if not the, most important steps in skin care. I currently use two products for this;
I have used and loved a lot of Dermalogica products over the years but no matter what I try I always come back to the Daily Microfoliant. It is a rice-based powder that turns into a scrub when activated by a small amount of water and provides the perfect amount of scrub for daily use. If you have sensitive skin or are not used to scrubbing every day you might pace yourself and start with a few times a week.
Once a week or when I am traveling a lot I up it to two times within a week I use the Oil of Olay Microdermabrasion Kit. This is another Margaret secret; it is not expensive and VERY effective. You use the paste part of the product, step 1, on dry skin, I do this before I shower, and massage for about a minute. Then use the liquid product, step 2, to neutralize the paste/ scrub and rinse with lots of water. The result is baby soft skin! I use this on my decolletage, back of my hands, basically anywhere that needs to be exfoliated!
My other line of defense is Dermaplaning! A secret I kept for years is that I shave my face; I hate all the peach fuzz and was told years ago by a pageant makeup artist that your makeup will go on so much better if you don’t have the fuzz- TRUTH! About 8 years ago I discovered you could have someone else do this for you! In California you have to have it done in a medial doctors office but luckily in Arizona the laws are different- check your state. I now have this done about once a month or every other month when getting a facial, plus is a great way to rejuvenate my skin when I have to be gentle with it while pregnant.
I will warn you though, do NOT try dermaplaning your own skin at home unless you are very skilled! You can get on Amazon and buy the tools and they make it sound so easy.. it is not! Margaret is the only person I know who can do their own face and it turn out really well- she also lasers her own face so let’s just say she is on a different level. Leave this to a professional!
DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! The skin under your eyes is the most sensitive on your face, it needs gentle special treatment, it is also the area of your face that ages the quickest!
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue is my go to. It is a bit thicker, so I use it at night and when my skin is dry, it has reflective qualities to help brighten the skin and it is soaks in really well.
Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream by 100% Pure is great for the mornings and throughout the day. It instantly tightens the skin and makes you feel more awake. Plus 100% Pure is one of the cleanest skin care lines you can buy!
I just received Tula Skincare Glow & Get It eye balm and am anxious to try it as well, it gives you a cooling pick me up any time of day. One of my favorite gals from Instagram @BagSnob (Tina Craig) and she has been talking about it. The product puts probiotics and superfoods into your skin, so stay tuned and I will let you know how it works!
Check back next week for Skin Care Part 2- Serum’s, Masks, Sunscreen, Secrets, Tools and more!
